The Perks and Pitfalls of Interning

Since graduating from fashion marketing last spring I have interned at two separate public relations companies. The great thing about interning is that generally you do not have a specific position so you’re able to be hands on with different projects and help out in all different fields. The job that you’re doing tends to be less in depth than it would be if you were an actual employee, but you still get to have a taste for the field that you plan to be working in. Interning with a company lets you act as a fly on the wall. You’re able to see everything that goes on, you get first hand experience as to how the field really is and you can gain valuable knowledge for when you are actually working in that field. Generally speaking, your internship will be one of your first “real” jobs after finishing school.

Why I Chose to Work in Public Relations

I didn’t know what I wanted

After high school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. I tested out a variety of cegep programs and I just couldn’t find one that was a good fit for me. I decided to take a break from school and chose to work full time. I moved out on my own and experienced life as a “real adult” with rent and bills to pay. To say that I did not enjoy it would be an understatement. While I loved having the freedom of my own place and being able to do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, having all of those responsibilities at such a young age was difficult. I decided that it was time to get back in school and figure out exactly what I wanted. In order to go back to school full time and truly be able to focus on academics, I chose to move back home.

Your Selfish Years

I am not a stressed person. Of course I have stress in my life but I handle it well and am great at not letting it get the best of me or consume me. I am 24 and live on my own, go to school full time and pay everything myself. It’s stressful but very manageable.

One area where I seem to have little control over my stress is my future. It’s normal to stress and worry about what is to come, if I wasn’t feeling any stress I would think that that is not normal. But lately I have started to let it consume my thoughts. I startdoubting my choices, resenting the fact that I am a student and feeling stressed that I don’t have my life figured out. After all, I am already 24. I should be completely settled and have everything set in my personal life, career and financially, right? If you think this sounds ridiculous then you’re more practical than I was allowing myself to be.

Writing: A Lost Art?

The National Commission on Writing has described the disastrous consequences of bad writing in America – for businesses, professions, educators, consumers, and citizens.  Poorly written reports, memos, announcements, and messages cost us time and money.  They are blood clots in the body politic.  The flow of information is blocked.  Crucial problems go unsolved.  Opportunities for reform and efficiency are buried.

Throughout ones entire education, a strong emphasis is placed on writing skills. In blogelementary school we are forced to practice basic spelling, grammar and sentence structure day after day. In high school and university we are given essay after essay to complete, each with half of the focus geared toward content and the other half based on the actual writing skills. But what happens once we leave school behind? Are these skills that we worked endlessly to hone no longer of use?

Golden Globes 2015 Looks of the Night

Like many fashion lovers, my favorite part of any award show is the red carpet. It’s wonderful that people are being awarded for their talent and hard work but personally, my main focus is seeing which stars are going to be on the the red carpet in beautiful, custom made gowns that look amazing and which celebrities are going to show up looking like a hot mess. For this years Golden Globes there was a lot of talent to choose from. Surprisingly, there were limited bad outfit choices, especially in comparison to previous years.

The Best Looks of the Night

Can I just say how refreshing it is to see some younger starlets ditch the gowns and opt for a cool, sexy look that isn’t all ruffles and poofy skirts? Lorde looks unquestionably chic in this Narciso Rodriguez pant suit and crop top. She not only looks mature while in a crop top which is, well let’s face it, pretty much impossible, but her look is classy. Her Neil Lane statement necklace adds the perfect amount of sparkle to her look.

If Not Me, Then Who?

It is no secret to anyone that knows me that I love Harry Potter. I grew up reading the books and spent my teen years anticipating each movie. Hermione Granger was one of the first characters that I was able to connect with. She was smart, brave and determined. A female role that was not common in the other book series that I had been reading.

As I grew older, my admiration for Hermione only grew. The fact that Emma Watson played her in the movies made the character even more appealing. Emma is classy, graceful and an amazing actress. It wasn’t long before I started following her as an actress and soon I had seen everything else she was in. Amongst the Lindsay’s and Paris Hilton’s of the world, Emma’s good girl attitude was something that never wavered.

I have always believed that women and men are equal. I am a strong woman and have tried to surround myself with like minded women. It has never been a second thought to me that men and women are and should be treated as equals. It has never seemed anything but logical to me that both men and women deserve to be treated with the same respect. I believe in gender equality. Yet, I have never felt comfortable associating myself with the term feminist. I share the same beliefs as a feminist but I have never felt comfortable using that word to define myself.

Summer Reads

One of the best parts about summer is all of the extra time you seem to have. The days seem so much longer, giving you more time to get everything you need to get done accomplished and still give you extra “me” time. I always find that the best way to fill up that extra time is reading. Summer is the best time to get lost in great books because you have so many options! Not only are there tons of amazing new releases but the amazing weather lets you have the option of reading inside at home or enjoying the weather at a park or by the water or wherever!

I am am a huge reader. I love finding and exploring new books, meeting the new characters and falling in love with them. I love fiction and non fiction, novels and memoirs. I can re-read the same book a hundred different times and fall a little more in love with it every time I read those last words. This summer I’ve already gone through a large stack of books, these are the ones that I’ve loved the most, my top summer reads!

Met Gala 2014

Ohh the Met Gala. Every year we wait to see what glamorous outfit each celebrity will show up in. The beautiful gowns, fitted tuxes and the always present “Worst Dressed” stars are what every fashion lover looks forward to critiquing. This years theme was Charles James: Beyond Fashion. A nod to America’s “First Couturier”, the dress code was strictly a black tie affair. Many stars rocked the red carpet in beautiful, structured gowns. Others were more daring, whether their looks worked or not is simply a matter of opinion.

Here are this writers top looks of the night.

Emma Stone has been making waves for herself in the fashion world over the past few weeks. She has been attending fashion shows, gracing the front row with her presence and topping “best dressed” lists for weeks. Wearing Thakoon, her long fuchsia skirt with a daring slit paired with a pink, cropped, sleeveless shirt was just the outfit she needed to be sure to continue her reign on all best dressed lists.

Building them up

Why is it so difficult for women to accept other women? In a world where we are still not considered equal to men, why must we work so hard against eachother? If you are career minded and can only think of how you can be successful and how hard you need to work to get there then you should not have to defend yourself to the women who are content with staying home, raising children and taking care of their household. However, you should not feel justified in tearing them down either.

For some reason, at some point in time, it became okay for women to attack other women for choosing a lifestyle that is different from theirs. It became a social norm for the stay at home moms and the working women to choose sides and battle it out. Who’s title is more demanding? Who are the harder workers? Who’s job holds more respect?

Why does it have to be one against the other. A real, mature woman should be happy for another woman, regardless of her choice. As long as they are contributing members of society, whether it is from the work they are doing at the office or at the home, then why should they be forced to feel bad about making their choice? Why should they feel the constant need to defend it? If a woman is happiest when she is at work, doing her job and getting things done, then she should be applauded. If a woman is happiest when she is at home, taking care of and nurturing her children, then she should be applauded. Neither one gets to “outrank” the other.

Women can be worse than men when it comes to judging other women. This idea of tearing down other women because they have chosen a different lifestyle than we have chosen for ourselves is quite simply petty and immature. If you are a real woman then you should be able to empower and encourage another real woman, regardless of their lifestyle. Tearing them down for it is the cowards way out.
