A little lost along the way..

I originally started my blog so I could have a creative outlet. Being a journalism student I am constantly writing and working on assignments, but it’s rare that I get to write about or focus on something that I am passionate about or that I choose completely on my own. I wanted to have a place where I could write about whatever I wanted, grow my passions and solidify my wiring skills in the process.

That was what A Fashionable Approach was supposed to be. But somewhere along the line I completely lost that. I started focusing more on what I thought other people would want to read. I started thinking solely abut what would grab the readers attention, what would impress brands, what would a publicist like to see. This was not my original goal and because I lost sight of that, my blog suffered.

I started looking at writing as a chore, as something I had to do rather than something I wanted to do. I would go weeks, sometimes months, without posting anything meaningful. I lost sight of why I started my blog and what I wanted it to be.

Don’t take my realizations as me being ungrateful. I am so blessed to have made the connections that I have and to have been able to use my blog to network and work with others, I’m not saying  plan on stopping that entirely. I’m saying that I lost my goal along the way and that instead of using my blog as something to monetize and endlessly wondering what others would like to read, I’d rather focus on what I’m passionate about.

My Meltdown Over MLT Down

To say that I like cheese would be like saying that Carrie Bradshaw likes shoes. It’s an understatement and doesn’t quite explain the relationship.
Thankfully, MLT Down is the type of restaurant that understands the love of cheese. The restaurant is made up of various heavenly versions of the basic grilled cheese. When I visited last week, I sat with one of the owners, Aly Moloo (all locations are co-owned by himself and his brother Rahim) and he told me about their experience in the food industry and how MLT Down had originally started in Kingston Ontario. It was apparent that the pair are not only passionate about the food industry, but that they are responsible for all the unique dishes offered and that customer satisfaction is extremely important to them. After going over the menu and not knowing which of the dishes to try, Aly suggested that I get a real taste for what they offer and ordered me three of the most popular items on the menu.

Staying Organized

I am an organizational freak. I swear, if I don’t have everything written down in my planner, iPhone calendar and iPad calendar, it will not get done. My friends always laugh at how picky I am with planners, I’ve been through four so far this semester!

People always comment on how organized I am and ask how I’m able to stay on top of all the things I have going on without it being a disaster. My answer is always a few liters of coffee a day (exaggerated I know, but not too far off!) and keeping track of everything I have to do in multiple ways!

Le Fix Bar Opening

I had the pleasure of attending a media event for the opening of Le Fix Bar, the first blow-dry and beauty bar to open in the West Island. Anyone who knows me knows that I rarely venture out of the downtown area often. I can’t even remember the last time I went out to the West Island for anything other than visiting family. This event had me leaving the comfort of my downtown solitude, in style of course, and heading out west.

The night started out at Juicyyy Lab in St Henri where we were served delicious watermelon juice and gin creations. After some mingling, all the guests were then chauffeured to DDO to Le Fix Bar  by limo; just a casual Thursday!

Walking in to Le Fix is like waking in to a glamorous girls only club. It’s filled with stations where you can get your hair blown out and styled by one of the many talented hair stylists and then head over to the nail stations where you can get your nails done with gel, shellac, or regular nail polish. They were offering pedicures, manicures and some delicious snacks from L’Gros Luxe. Also featured in Le Fix Bar was the new, second location of Juicyyy Lab, serving more delicious, signature drinks. They definitely get 5 stars for both taste and presentation!

This night was a fashion girls playground. Everywhere you looked there was someone getting their hair done, nails done, a massage or just enjoying the delicious, and instagram worthy, treats. I myself got my hair blown out and it looked fabulous! I am so lazy when it comes to my hair so it felt so nice to have someone wash and style it and it felt even better once I saw the outcome! I am SO picky when it comes to my hair and the stylist I had styled it exactly as I asked.

I recently took a break from gel manicures, my nails were in terrible need of a breather, so I was a little afraid that they wouldn’t have many options available for regular nail polish. Luckily for me they had a variety of different colours, including a pretty light pink colour that I chose to go with!

After everyone was sufficiently glammed up, the limos arrived whisking everyone back downtown. The party continued at Somwhr Liquor Lounge in the Old Port. The bottles flowed and the music blared and the night ended on the same party note that it started on.

Feel It On The First – Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Alright ladies, listen up!! We all know how much cancer sucks. It takes the people that we love, it ruins lives and families, it’s terrible. And since October is #breastcancerawareness month, we’re going to do just that and raise some awareness!

Now I’ve been lucky enough to have never been affected directly by breast cancer. The women in my family have never had it and no one close to me has either. I also however, have never done a self examination on myself. Ever. As I write this I am embarrassed to admit that at 24 years old I’ve yet to take the time to exam my own body. Well today, all of that changed.

Adopt, Don’t Shop

I absolutely adore dogs. I always have. They are the sweetest, most loving creatures on this planet. They give you unconditional love and they really are man, and woman’s, best friend.

Three months ago my boyfriend and I made the decision to adopt a dog. we had both wanted one for so long and it felt like it was finally the perfect time to make the commitment. So we started looking online at the SPCA and other animal adoption agencies. I found a few here and there that I thought could possibly be a good fit for us, but none felt right. I kept looking for a few more weeks until one day on my lunch break I found an article from MTL Blog about dogs currently available for adoption. I started browsing through it and found a dog named Pressley. She had the sweetest eyes I had ever seen and just looking at her picture made my heart race. All I wanted to do was hug her.

Sunday Delights

This weekend I was lucky enough to attend a popup shop suitably named Sunday Delights. A delight it was! Between the open, airy space and all the young entrepreneurs there promoting their brands and showcasing their work, it was an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

It was so refreshing to see all of these young women representing themselves and their work so proudly! After attending the TedxMontrealWomen conference on Saturday (absolutely inspiring and there is a post coming on that soon!) it was amazing to see all of these young women band together and arrange a day to help promote and support each other! Every vendor there was encouraging the guests to visit each table and all the ladies had only positive things to say about everyone showcasing there. It was the perfect girly afternoon!

50 Things About Moi

A friend of mine did a post like this on her blog and it inspired me to do the same. I can say now that finding 50 things about me to speak about was not easy. I do find myself pretty interesting but fifty fun facts is a lot. Here they are in no particular order!

1 – I consider pizza to be it’s own food group and could live off of it happily.

2 – I am an avid reader and have trouble understanding people who don’t enjoy reading.

3 – The Harry Potter book series is a HUGE part of my life and shaped my childhood. They are my biggest obsession.

4 – I get bored very easily.

5 – I love bright colours and patterns yet always end up wearing dark colours and neutrals.
