Staying Organized

I am an organizational freak. I swear, if I don’t have everything written down in my planner, iPhone calendar and iPad calendar, it will not get done. My friends always laugh at how picky I am with planners, I’ve been through four so far this semester!

People always comment on how organized I am and ask how I’m able to stay on top of all the things I have going on without it being a disaster. My answer is always a few liters of coffee a day (exaggerated I know, but not too far off!) and keeping track of everything I have to do in multiple ways!

1-) My planner – this one is a given. Even though most people seem to be switching to electronic only, I find something so calming about a list of things that I have to do that are written on paper. I write everything out in my weekly view as soon as I am given a due date and then I write it out in the monthly overview as well so I know what to prepare for when making my monthly schedule. I’m very selective when it comes to planners but this year I’m using this one from Sugar Paper & Co. It’s very small, which is different for me, but I absolutely love it! It’s the perfect size to always have on hand and it fits in all of my purses!

iPhone/iPad – I always have both of these on me. My phone is a given, who actually goes anywhere without there’s anymore? But my iPad is a huge attribute to helping me stay so organized. I have the two synced up so every time I add something to the calendar of one, it’s immediately added to the other. Every time I add a note to one, it syncs. It’s extremely helpful. Like my planner, I write everything in here the second I receive a date. If someone emails me to attend an event, it’s entered in here right away. It may seem like too much to have dates written in 3 separate calendars but anyone who’s ever lost a planner can attest to how necessary this is!

To do list – I love making lists. Maybe it’s from watching too much Gilmore Girls growing up and seeing Rory’s obsession with them, but I love it. It keeps me organized. So every Sunday I make a to do list for the upcoming week. I write out everything that has to be done, big task or small. Then I compare the list with the weekly view of my planner and distribute the tasks to each day. This way I know what days I have too much going on to handle any more big tasks and which days I am free to tackle the major things. It keeps me on top of everything and stops me from completely over-scheduling myself, at least most of the time! I’ve even gotten in to the habit of making my boyfriend a to do list for each week as well, though I don’t think he loves it quite as much as I do!

Do App – this app is a recent discovery but I am obsessed. It is a to do list app ( I already admitted I was obsessed with lists!) that synchronizes with your phones calendar. It shows up in your notifications and you can cross them off from there as you go. It helps to always see your list, that way you’re less likely to forget to do them.
